Dandruff Shampoo

• 1/4 cup shampoo of your choice (but not a shampoo that contains a conditioner, a dandruff shampoo, or an oily hair shampoo)

• 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

• 3 tablespoons apple juice

• 1/2 teaspoon rum extract

• 6 finely ground cloves

In a blender, mix all ingredients on low for 30 seconds. Wet the hair with warm water and shampoo the mixture into the hair well. Rinse with warm water. Makes 1/4 cup. Cover and refrigerate. Discard after 3 days!

Apple cider vinegar will help restore the proper acid/alkaline balance of the scalp and kill a bacteria that clogs the pores that release oil to the scalp. The clogged pores result in scales and crusts being formed. Another similar remedy suggests pouring two tablespoons into a cup, applying the straight vinegar to the scalp, and leaving it on from 15 minutes to three hours before shampooing. Lemon juice may also be used. It is the acid in these remedies that helps bring the scalp back into chemical balance.

What causes dandruff?
"Contrary to popular belief, dandruff is not from a dry scalp or from improper hair care," says Cheryl Citron, M.D., a Livingston, N.J. based dermatologist, who explains that an overabundance of the yeast-like organism Malassezia furfur (coupled with an oily scalp) aggravates the condition. "Make sure you're alternating a medicated dandruff shampoo with a regular shampoo, particularly when you're stressed," 

Exactly what causes an overgrowth of these organisms isn't known, although increased oil production; hormonal fluctuations; stress; illness; neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease; and a suppressed immune system;  may contribute to the development of dandruff.

Dandruff can affect many different people in every age group. Dandruff can manifest as either very dry and flaky scalp or very oily scalp with flakes. There are many different homemade dandruff treatments that are designed to combat dandruff today. Whatever recipe you select, take your time and understand that every treatment works differently for every situation.

Dandruff tips

• Massage your scalp daily with dandruff treatment (above), castor oil or olive oil; castor oil mixed half-and-half with vinegar; vinegar or lemon juice diluted with an equal amount of water or mint tea; rubbing alcohol or witch hazel.

• Follow each shampoo with a final rinse of strong tea; catnip, celery-seed, rosemary, mint, wintergreen; add 1 tablespoon vinegar to increase the benefits. After the rinse, massage your scalp with a mixture of 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon witch hazel, and 2 crushed aspirins.

• Always dry your hair with a fresh towel, and always use your own combs and brushes.
