Dry shampoo removes grease and dirt from your hair when you are unable to wet it. Some people like to use dry shampoos when they are camping and fresh water is hard to find. Dry shampoos are also a helpful alternative for the bedridden of for cleaning wigs and hairpieces. Those of you who have tried them know that using a dry shampoo can be a bit messy. Make sure you are standing on a towel or leaning over a sink when applying one indoors.
Instant Dry Shampoo
These rub-in, brush-out cleaners can be utilized to remove surface soil,
oil, and odor during illness or for any-time waterless freshening.
- Almond meal, bran, cornmeal, oatmeal, sawdust, or talc. can be sprinkled through the hair, massaged in for 5 minutes, then brushed out. Mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with any of these substances aids odor control. Place your favorite dried flowers or herbs or essential oils on top of the mix for scent.
- Borax, dissolved in alcohol and rubbed into well-brushed hair, then removed with a towel is a hundred-year-old solution.
- Egg white, beaten to a stiff meringue, rubbed into the hair and scalp and allowed to dry before being brushed out, is used for bedridden patients in European hospitals.
- Witch hazel, or an antiseptic mouthwash, applied to the scalp and thoroughly brushed out, relieves "itchiness" and removed surface contaminants. For blondes, 3-percent hydrogen peroxide will serve the same purpose and lighten hair roots.

Missing one or even two days of wet hair washing with warm water and your favorite shampoo is definitely safe when compared to ancient standards for hair care.
