Recipes to make your own gifts

Use these recipes for homemade layer jar mixes - so much fun to make and give as gifts to delight your friends and family.

Use can buy Ball canning jars on sale in the fall or save your glass or plastic mayonnaise, spaghetti and pickle jars throughout the year. Either way, run them through the dishwasher a few time and they'll be ready to go. Large mouth openings are easier to get the ingredients in.

When putting in the ingredients, make sure to pack them down tightly. If you have loose ingredients like nuts, M&M, raisins...etc. make sure they are the next ingredient on top of packed brown sugar. If the next layer is to be white sugar or flour, the white sugar or flour will seep through the nuts, M&M...etc some what.

To decorate your jars, cut up your fabric scraps into 9 inch diameter circles, (or you can buy fabric scraps from the remnant bin of your local craft store). I like to buy a few yards of Holiday patterned fabric to have on hand.

If you are using a canning jar, screw down the jar ring to hold fabric in place or hold fabric with a ribbon, raffia, twine, yarn, lace or string (first secure the fabric with a rubber band before tying).

If you are using a recycled jar, put the fabric circle over the lid and hold in place with a rubber band. Tie with a ribbon, raffia, twine, yarn, lace or string to cover rubber band.

Punch a hole into the corner of the tag and use the ribbon,  to attach the tag to the jar.

Theses gifts should keep for up to six months. If the mix contains nuts, it should be used within 3 months.
