The salt in this wicker, rattan or cane cleaner helps to soften

Wicker and Rattan Cleaner

1 cup hot water
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons liquid castile soap

Dissolve salt in the hot water, then add liquid soap. Mix until all is dissolved and allow to cool. To use, spray on and wipe off. The salt helps to soften the wicker or rattan, allowing the dirt to soak away easier. If your cane, wicker or rattan is painted, check it first for color fastness of paint. If furniture isn't color fast, just use a soap and water combo.

Tips for Wicker, Rattan & Cane:

Mist it: Care for wicker, rattan, and cane by misting it with plain water several times a year. (Let it dry thoroughly before using it.) To prevent cracks from developing, move your furniture out of direct sunlight and away from a fireplace, both of which can dry out wicker. Be sure to bring pieces indoor when temperature dips toward the freezing point.

Easy fix for sagging: To tighten a drooping cane seat, turn the chair upside down and then wet the underside (except for the chair's rim) with a damp sponge. Let the chair dry for 24 hours or overnight; the cane should have shrunk back into shape.

Protect wicker furniture by painting it with latex paint. Pick cool summer colors or create an antique look by diluting a deep color with water at a ratio of two parts paint to one part water. For this technique, apply the paint solution with a brush, but before it has dried thoroughly, wipe the raised surfaces with a cloth.

Spray-paint wicker furniture inside a large cardboard carton. (Boxes that hold large appliances work well; ask for throwaways from local appliance stores.) Cut off one side of the box and place the wicker piece inside. Work in a ventilated space - outdoors, on a dry, sunny day, if possible.
